TREATMENT OVERVIEW
The ViaDisc NP® Procedure is an innovative, minimally invasive treatment for chronic low back pain caused by Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD). This non-surgical option works by delivering supplemental nucleus pulposus tissue directly into your damaged disc, providing the essential building blocks that may help your own body repair and restore the disc, leading to lasting pain relief.
PROCEDURE DETAILS
The ViaDisc NP procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthetic and light sedation to ensure your comfort. While you are lying face down, the skin on your lower back is cleaned and thoroughly numbed.
Using fluoroscopy (live X-ray) for continuous guidance, your physician will first perform a discogram to confirm that the targeted disc is the source of your pain. A thin needle is then carefully guided into the center of this degenerated disc (the nucleus pulposus).
The ViaDisc NP allograft, a dehydrated powder of nucleus pulposus tissue, is mixed with sterile saline and then slowly injected through the needle into the disc. Once inside, it rehydrates to provide supplemental tissue and vital nutrients to the damaged area. The needle is then removed and a small bandage is applied.
TREATMENT ADVANTAGES
ViaDisc NP offers a new frontier in treating Degenerative Disc Disease, moving beyond managing symptoms to actively supplementing the damaged disc in a simple, non-surgical procedure.
This is one of the first procedures designed to directly supplement the degenerated nucleus pulposus, the core of the disc and the source of vertebrogenic pain.
By delivering essential proteins and scaffolding, ViaDisc NP provides the building blocks that may support your own body's ability to repair and restore disc health.
Performed with a single needle, this procedure avoids the major surgery, long recovery, and altered mechanics of spinal fusion or disc replacement.
Clinical studies have shown that patients can experience significant and lasting improvements in pain and function, with results lasting for years.
Unlike fusion surgery, which eliminates movement, ViaDisc NP is a non-destructive procedure that aims to restore the disc while preserving your natural spinal motion.
The entire procedure is typically completed in under an hour, allowing you to return home the same day to begin your recovery.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The ViaDisc NP procedure is safe, and since it uses donated human tissue that is rigorously screened, the risks are low. The most common side effect is a temporary increase in back pain as the disc adapts.
Important: Following the post-procedure recovery protocol, especially the initial period of restricted activity, is absolutely critical to allow the allograft to integrate and the healing process to begin successfully.
PREPARATION GUIDE
Proper preparation is key to a successful and smooth procedure. Please review the following important steps to ensure you are ready for your appointment.
Ensure you have a thorough review with Dr. Fura. Disclose all allergies, especially to medications like contrast dye.
Stop blood thinners and other specific medications as instructed by Dr. Fura before your procedure.
Do not eat or drink after midnight. You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home afterward.
Wear comfortable, loose clothing. Avoid jewelry and leave valuables at home for safekeeping.
RECOVERY GUIDE
Recovery is a gradual healing process. Patience and adherence to your activity restrictions are essential to give the disc the best possible chance to repair itself.
After a short monitoring period, you will go home with a driver. The first two weeks are critical. You will have strict activity restrictions, including NO bending, lifting, or twisting (BLT), to protect the disc as it heals.
Post-procedure soreness will subside. You will gradually increase your daily activities and begin a specific physical therapy program focused on core strengthening and stabilization.
Pain relief and functional improvement are gradual as the disc tissue remodels. You may not feel the full benefits for several months as your body continues its healing process.
You will have follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and adjust your rehabilitation plan. Full improvement can continue for up to 12 months post-procedure.
Please don't hesitate to reach out and request an appointment. We look forward to meeting with you, addressing your concerns, and working together to enhance your quality of life.
