TREATMENT OVERVIEW
Trigger Point Injections (TPIs) are a simple and highly effective treatment for relieving pain caused by trigger points—tight, painful "knots" in your muscles. These knots can cause localized pain, stiffness, and even referred pain in other parts of your body. A TPI helps to release the knot and break the cycle of pain, providing rapid relief.
PROCEDURE DETAILS
The procedure for a Trigger Point Injection is very quick and straightforward. First, your physician will locate the precise trigger point by carefully palpating the muscle. You will be seated or lying in a comfortable position to ensure the muscle is relaxed.
Once the trigger point is identified, the skin overlying the area is cleaned with an antiseptic. The procedure is so quick that numbing the skin beforehand is typically not necessary.
Your physician then inserts a very thin needle directly into the trigger point. This may cause a brief muscle twitch or a fleeting reproduction of your pain, which is a good sign that the needle is in the right spot. A small amount of medication, such as a local anesthetic, is injected to relax the muscle. Multiple trigger points can be treated in a single visit.
TREATMENT ADVANTAGES
Trigger Point Injections provide a fast, direct, and effective solution for myofascial pain that has not responded to other conservative treatments like stretching or massage.
By directly targeting the muscle knot, the injection can provide immediate release of tension and a significant reduction in pain.
TPIs relax the taut bands of muscle fibers that cause chronic tightness, alleviating the deep, aching discomfort associated with trigger points.
Releasing a painful muscle knot allows the muscle to lengthen and function properly, leading to improved flexibility and greater ease of movement.
Unlike oral medications, TPIs deliver treatment precisely to the source of pain, providing focused relief with minimal systemic side effects.
TPIs are effective for conditions like tension headaches or arm pain that are referred from trigger points in the neck and shoulder muscles.
The entire procedure is typically completed in just a few minutes in an office setting, allowing you to get back to your day quickly.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Trigger Point Injections are an exceptionally safe procedure with a very low risk of complications. The most common side effects are minor, localized to the injection site, and resolve quickly on their own.
Important: While TPIs are very safe, it is still important to discuss your medical history and any allergies with your doctor before the procedure.
PREPARATION GUIDE
Preparation for a Trigger Point Injection is minimal, but following your doctor's specific instructions will ensure a smooth and effective treatment.
Ensure you have a thorough review with Dr. Fura. Disclose all allergies, especially to medications like contrast dye.
Stop blood thinners and other specific medications as instructed by Dr. Fura before your procedure.
Do not eat or drink after midnight. You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home afterward.
Wear comfortable, loose clothing. Avoid jewelry and leave valuables at home for safekeeping.
RECOVERY GUIDE
Recovery from TPIs is typically very fast and simple. Following these easy steps can help you get the most out of your treatment.
You can resume your normal daily activities. To manage any post-injection soreness, you can apply moist heat or an ice pack. Gentle stretching of the treated muscle is often recommended.
Any soreness from the injection itself should be gone. You will likely notice a significant improvement in the pain and tightness that was caused by the trigger point.
Continue with any recommended stretches or home exercises to prevent the trigger point from returning. The full benefit of the treatment is typically experienced by this time.
A follow-up visit may be scheduled to assess your response. If the trigger points are part of a larger chronic issue, a comprehensive physical therapy program may be recommended.
