TREATMENT OVERVIEW
A Sympathetic Nerve Block is an advanced injection procedure designed to treat chronic pain driven by the sympathetic nervous system. For conditions like Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), this system can become overactive and transmit persistent pain signals. This block can diagnose the issue and provide significant relief by interrupting these signals and breaking the cycle of pain.
PROCEDURE DETAILS
During the procedure, you will be positioned comfortably on your back or stomach, depending on the target area. An IV line may be started for safety and monitoring. The skin is then cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic.
This is a high-precision procedure that requires image guidance. Using fluoroscopy (live X-ray), your physician will guide a thin needle to the specific collection of sympathetic nerves, or "ganglion," that controls pain signals for your affected limb. This includes the stellate ganglion in the neck for arm pain or the lumbar sympathetic chain in the back for leg pain.
A contrast dye is injected to confirm the medication will spread correctly over the target nerves. Once confirmed, a local anesthetic is slowly administered to "block" the ganglion. You will be monitored closely in our office after the procedure before being cleared to go home.
TREATMENT ADVANTAGES
For complex pain syndromes, sympathetic blocks are a critical tool, offering diagnostic insight and therapeutic relief when other treatments have failed.
If the block provides significant relief, it confirms the sympathetic nervous system is a primary driver of your pain, which is crucial for your long-term treatment plan.
By interrupting overactive pain signals, the procedure can help "reset" the nervous system, providing pain relief that often lasts much longer than the anesthetic itself.
The block often improves blood flow to the painful limb, which can reduce swelling, discoloration, and burning sensations common in conditions like CRPS.
Pain relief from a successful block creates a crucial window of opportunity to engage in the intensive physical therapy needed for long-term recovery.
The procedure can significantly decrease allodynia (extreme sensitivity to light touch) that is a hallmark of sympathetically-maintained pain.
This treatment provides powerful relief to a specific limb or region without the widespread side effects of high-dose oral pain medications.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Sympathetic blocks are advanced procedures that are very safe when performed by a specialist. Certain temporary side effects are expected and are actually signs of a successful block, while true complications are rare.
Important: A detailed discussion of your medical history is vital. The temporary side effects of a neck (stellate ganglion) block are expected signs of success and will be explained fully before your procedure.
PREPARATION GUIDE
Proper preparation is key to a successful and smooth procedure. Please review the following important steps to ensure you are ready for your appointment.
Ensure you have a thorough review with Dr. Fura. Disclose all allergies, especially to medications like contrast dye.
Stop blood thinners and other specific medications as instructed by Dr. Fura before your procedure.
Do not eat or drink after midnight. You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home afterward.
Wear comfortable, loose clothing. Avoid jewelry and leave valuables at home for safekeeping.
RECOVERY GUIDE
Your recovery period involves in-office monitoring and careful observation at home. Following these steps is vital for safety and evaluating the block's success.
After 30-60 minutes of monitoring, you can go home but must not drive. Rest for the day. If you had a neck block, be mindful of temporary hoarseness. Keep a detailed pain diary.
The anesthetic and its temporary side effects will wear off. Your original pain may return as the medication fades. This is normal and an important part of the diagnostic process.
The therapeutic benefit of "calming" the nervous system may become apparent. This is the ideal time to fully engage in your physical therapy program to maximize long-term gains.
Your follow-up is critical. You will discuss your pain diary to determine if the block was successful. Often, a series of blocks is recommended for cumulative, lasting relief.
