TREATMENT OVERVIEW

Stellate Ganglion Block

A Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) is a highly specialized injection that targets a collection of sympathetic nerves in the neck. This procedure has shown remarkable success in treating complex conditions, including chronic pain in the arm like Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), and has emerged as a groundbreaking treatment for symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) by helping to "reboot" the body's fight-or-flight response.

Quick Facts

  • • Procedure Duration: 10-15 minutes
  • • Recovery Time: In-office monitoring, then rest for the day
  • • Onset of Relief: Immediate diagnostic signs; therapeutic effects vary
  • • Key Uses: CRPS of the arm, PTSD, Long COVID

PROCEDURE DETAILS

What is the Procedure?

For a Stellate Ganglion Block, you will be comfortably positioned on your back with your head slightly turned. The skin on the side of your neck will be cleaned with an antiseptic, and an IV line may be placed for monitoring.

This is a delicate procedure that demands extreme precision. Using live ultrasound and/or fluoroscopy (X-ray), your physician will carefully navigate a very thin needle through the neck tissues to the precise location in front of the stellate ganglion, avoiding critical structures like blood vessels and nerves.

Once the position is confirmed, a local anesthetic is slowly injected to numb the ganglion and interrupt its signals. The entire procedure is very quick. Afterward, you will be monitored closely in our recovery area as the block takes effect.

TREATMENT ADVANTAGES

What are the Benefits?

A Stellate Ganglion Block can be a transformative procedure for some of the most challenging chronic pain and trauma-related conditions.

Relief from CRPS & Nerve Pain

Provides powerful relief from the burning pain, swelling, hypersensitivity, and discoloration in the arm and hand caused by CRPS.

Breakthrough PTSD Treatment

Can "reboot" the brain's fight-or-flight center (amygdala), reducing hypervigilance, anxiety, and other debilitating symptoms of PTSD.

Restores Blood Flow

By calming the sympathetic nerves, an SGB can dramatically improve circulation to the affected arm, reducing color and temperature changes.

Reduces Hypervigilance

For trauma survivors, the block can provide a profound and immediate sense of calm, allowing for more effective engagement in psychotherapy.

Enables Physical Therapy

For pain patients, the relief from an SGB creates a vital window of opportunity to participate in therapy to restore function to the arm and hand.

Rapid, Minimally Invasive

A quick, outpatient procedure that can offer life-changing results with minimal downtime, especially compared to long-term medication regimens.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

What are the Risks and Side Effects?

An SGB is very safe when performed by a skilled specialist with image guidance. It's important to understand that certain temporary side effects are normal and are actually signs of a successful block. True complications are very rare.

Common & Expected Side Effects

  • (Expected) Temporary droopy eyelid on the treated side
  • (Expected) Temporary red, watery eye and stuffy nose
  • (Expected) Mild hoarseness or a feeling of a lump in the throat
  • A feeling of warmth in the arm (a positive sign)

Rare Complications

  • Infection or significant bleeding (hematoma)
  • Nerve damage to surrounding structures
  • Seizure (if medication enters a major blood vessel)
  • Difficulty breathing or collapsed lung

Important: The common side effects listed are known as "Horner's Syndrome." They are temporary (lasting a few hours) and are a clear indication that the medication was delivered to the correct location.

PREPARATION GUIDE

How to Prepare for the Procedure?

Proper preparation for this advanced procedure is key to ensuring your safety and a successful outcome. Please review these steps carefully.

Review of Allergies

Ensure you have a thorough review with Dr. Fura. Disclose all allergies, especially to medications like contrast dye.

Medication Adjustments

Stop blood thinners and other specific medications as instructed by Dr. Fura before your procedure.

Fasting & Transportation

Do not eat or drink after midnight. You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home afterward.

Day of Procedure Attire

Wear comfortable, loose clothing. Avoid jewelry and leave valuables at home for safekeeping.

RECOVERY GUIDE

What is the Post-Procedure Care?

Your post-procedure care involves a brief monitoring period in our clinic followed by careful observation at home. Understanding the recovery process is key.

First 24 Hours

You will be monitored for 30-60 minutes after the block. You MUST have a driver to take you home. Rest for the day. The expected side effects (droopy eyelid, etc.) will last for several hours. Start with sips of water, as swallowing may feel different.

Days 2-3

The temporary side effects will have completely resolved. You can now begin to assess the true therapeutic benefit for your pain or PTSD symptoms. You can return to light, normal activities.

First Week

This is a critical period to build on the gains from the procedure. Engage fully with your physical or psychological therapist to maximize the "neural reboot" and achieve lasting results.

Follow-up Visit

Your follow-up is essential to discuss your response. For some conditions, particularly PTSD, a second block may be recommended to solidify the benefits and provide a more durable outcome.

When to Contact Your Doctor

  • Lasting hoarseness, difficulty breathing, or shortness of breath
  • Signs of infection (fever, chills, severe neck pain)
  • Seizure, loss of consciousness, or severe confusion
  • A large, growing, painful lump in your neck (hematoma)
