TREATMENT OVERVIEW
For patients who have experienced significant pain relief during a trial, the Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) implant is the definitive next step. This procedure involves placing the entire system under the skin, providing a seamless, durable, and discreet solution for managing chronic pain long-term, empowering you to reclaim your life from the limitations of your condition.
PROCEDURE DETAILS
The implant procedure is performed in an operating room or surgical suite under sedation and local anesthetic. Using fluoroscopy (live X-ray), new, sterile leads are precisely placed in the epidural space to replicate the optimal coverage you experienced during your trial.
A second small incision is then made, typically in the upper buttock or flank area. Your surgeon creates a small, comfortable pocket under the skin to hold the implantable pulse generator (IPG), which is the small battery that powers the system.
The leads are then gently passed under the skin from your spine to the IPG pocket and connected. The system is tested to ensure it is working perfectly. Finally, both incisions are closed, leaving the entire system safely and discreetly inside your body.
TREATMENT ADVANTAGES
A permanent implant transforms the promise of your successful trial into a lasting reality, offering freedom, control, and a dramatic improvement in your quality of life.
Provides consistent, 24/7 pain management, allowing you to plan your life again without the constant intrusion and unpredictability of chronic pain.
The entire system is internal, so you can swim, shower, and live your life without external hardware. No one will know the device is there unless you tell them.
You are in control of your pain relief. Using a simple, wireless remote, you can adjust the therapy, switch programs, or turn the system on and off at any time.
Modern systems feature convenient, rechargeable batteries that can last for 10 years or more, requiring only simple wireless charging through the skin.
SCS is a proven, FDA-approved therapy to help patients significantly reduce or eliminate their need for long-term oral opioid medications and their side effects.
The ultimate benefit is reclaiming your life—returning to hobbies, work, social events, and family activities that chronic pain had taken from you.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The SCS implant procedure is safe and effective, but as with any implanted device, it has potential risks and side effects that your surgeon will discuss with you thoroughly.
Important: Following all post-operative instructions carefully, especially activity restrictions, is the most crucial step you can take to minimize risks like infection and lead migration.
PREPARATION GUIDE
Proper preparation is key to a successful and smooth procedure. Please review the following important steps to ensure you are ready for your appointment.
Ensure you have a thorough review with Dr. Fura. Disclose all allergies, especially to medications like contrast dye.
Stop blood thinners and other specific medications as instructed by Dr. Fura before your procedure.
Do not eat or drink after midnight. You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home afterward.
Wear comfortable, loose clothing. Avoid jewelry and leave valuables at home for safekeeping.
RECOVERY GUIDE
Your recovery focuses on allowing the incisions to heal and the leads to secure themselves in place. Following activity restrictions is essential for a successful outcome.
After a short stay in recovery, you will be discharged home with a driver. You will have two incision sites to care for. The primary focus is rest and managing post-operative soreness.
Strict activity restrictions are crucial. You must avoid bending, lifting anything over 5-10 lbs, and twisting your torso. This allows scar tissue to form and anchor the leads permanently.
Your first major follow-up will occur. Once your surgeon confirms that everything is healing well, your activity restrictions will be gradually lifted, and you may begin a physical therapy program.
You will have regular check-ups to fine-tune your device programming with a specialist from the device company, ensuring you get the most effective and comfortable pain relief possible.
Please don't hesitate to reach out and request an appointment. We look forward to meeting with you, addressing your concerns, and working together to enhance your quality of life.
