TREATMENT OVERVIEW

Orthobiologics & Regenerative Medicine

Orthobiologics represent a revolutionary field of medicine that utilizes your body's own natural ability to heal itself. Instead of just masking pain, these therapies aim to repair and regenerate damaged tissues—including joints, tendons, ligaments, and spinal structures—using substances derived from natural biological sources to provide lasting relief and restore function.

Quick Facts

  • • Goal: Stimulate natural tissue repair and regeneration
  • • Source Materials: Patient's blood, bone marrow, or amniotic tissues
  • • Approach: Minimally invasive, precision-guided injections
  • • Key Principle: Focus on healing the root cause of pain

PROCEDURE DETAILS

What is the Process?

Your journey with regenerative medicine begins with a thorough consultation, including a physical exam and advanced imaging to determine if you are a candidate and which therapy is right for your specific condition.

Depending on the chosen therapy, the process involves either a simple blood draw for PRP or a bone marrow aspiration for BMAC. This harvested material is then prepared in our on-site lab using a specialized centrifuge to concentrate the powerful healing components into a small, injectable form.

Using advanced ultrasound or fluoroscopy for pinpoint accuracy, the prepared orthobiologic is meticulously injected directly into the site of your injury. This precise delivery to your arthritic joint, damaged disc, or torn tendon initiates the body's natural regenerative process.

TREATMENT ADVANTAGES

What are the Benefits?

Orthobiologics represent a powerful shift from traditional treatments, moving toward solutions that repair, rebuild, and restore function from within.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

Uses a concentration of your own blood platelets and growth factors to accelerate the healing of tendons, ligaments, and arthritic joints.

Bone Marrow Concentrate (BMAC)

A potent therapy that uses stem cells and growth factors from your own bone marrow to regenerate tissue and treat more advanced orthopedic conditions.

Amniotic Tissue Allografts

Utilizes growth factors and anti-inflammatory proteins from donated amniotic tissue to reduce pain and support your body's own repair process.

Safe & Natural Approach

These therapies leverage natural biological materials, especially your own, dramatically reducing the risk of rejection or allergic reaction.

Heals the Underlying Injury

Unlike treatments that only mask symptoms, orthobiologics aim to repair the source of the pain, offering the potential for long-lasting relief and improved function.

Alternative to Surgery

Offers a powerful, non-surgical option that can help patients with chronic pain conditions delay or even avoid the need for major invasive surgery.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

What are the Risks and Side Effects?

Orthobiologic therapies are extremely safe due to their natural origin, especially when using your own blood or bone marrow. The most common side effects are a normal, expected part of the healing response.

Common Side Effects

  • (Expected) Post-injection pain, swelling, and stiffness for several days
  • Bruising at the harvest site (arm or pelvis) or injection site
  • Soreness at the bone marrow aspiration site (for BMAC)
  • Temporary increase in inflammation as healing begins

Rare Complications

  • Infection (as with any injection)
  • Bleeding or nerve irritation
  • Failure of the therapy to provide significant improvement
  • Low theoretical risk of reaction to allograft tissues

Important: The initial inflammatory response and soreness are often positive signs that the therapy is working. It's crucial to avoid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which can hinder this natural healing process.

PREPARATION GUIDE

How to Prepare for the Procedure?

Proper preparation is key to a successful and smooth procedure. Please review the following important steps to ensure you are ready for your appointment.

Review of Allergies

Ensure you have a thorough review with Dr. Fura. Disclose all allergies, especially to medications like contrast dye.

Medication Adjustments

Stop blood thinners and other specific medications as instructed by Dr. Fura before your procedure.

Fasting & Transportation

Do not eat or drink after midnight. You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home afterward.

Day of Procedure Attire

Wear comfortable, loose clothing. Avoid jewelry and leave valuables at home for safekeeping.

RECOVERY GUIDE

What is the Post-Procedure Care?

Recovery is a process of regeneration. It requires patience and adherence to a rehabilitation plan to achieve the best possible long-term outcome.

Initial Rest Period (First Week)

Expect soreness and swelling as the healing response begins. Focus on protecting the treated area with rest, ice, and elevation. Avoid all anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs).

Gradual Re-engagement (Weeks 2-6)

The initial soreness will subside. You will begin a carefully prescribed physical therapy program to gently load the healing tissues and restore strength and mobility.

Tissue Remodeling (Months 2-6)

Your body will continue to heal and strengthen the repaired tissue. Your pain levels should continue to decrease as your function and strength improve through rehabilitation.

Follow-up & Assessment

Full results can take 6 months or more to realize. Follow-up visits will track your progress, and depending on your condition, a series of treatments may be needed for the best outcome.

When to Contact Your Doctor

  • Signs of infection (high fever, chills, severe redness or drainage)
  • Severe, unrelenting pain beyond the expected initial soreness
  • New or worsening weakness or numbness
  • Signs of a blood clot or severe allergic reaction
