TREATMENT OVERVIEW
An Epidural Steroid Injection (ESI) is a minimally invasive procedure designed to relieve pain in the neck, back, arms, and legs caused by inflamed spinal nerves. By delivering a potent anti-inflammatory medication directly to the source of pain in the epidural space, an ESI can provide significant relief and improve function for conditions like herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and sciatica.
PROCEDURE DETAILS
The Epidural Steroid Injection procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. You will be positioned comfortably, typically lying on your stomach, and the injection site on your back or neck will be cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic to ensure minimal discomfort.
Using advanced X-ray imaging called fluoroscopy, your physician will precisely guide a thin needle into the epidural space—the area surrounding your spinal cord and nerve roots. A contrast dye is often injected first to confirm the correct placement and ensure the medication will reach the targeted inflamed nerves.
Once the needle is properly positioned, a combination of a long-lasting corticosteroid and a local anesthetic is slowly injected. The corticosteroid works to reduce inflammation and swelling, while the anesthetic provides immediate pain relief. The entire process is usually completed within 30 minutes.
TREATMENT ADVANTAGES
Epidural Steroid Injections offer a powerful, non-surgical solution for managing chronic spinal pain, providing numerous advantages for patients seeking to reclaim their quality of life.
Delivers powerful anti-inflammatory medication directly to the source of nerve irritation, providing more effective relief than oral medications.
The primary benefit is the reduction of swelling and inflammation around spinal nerves, which is the root cause of many types of back and leg pain.
As a non-surgical treatment, it avoids the risks, costs, and lengthy recovery time associated with invasive spinal surgery.
Pain relief can improve mobility and allow you to participate more effectively in physical therapy and other rehabilitation programs.
The procedure can help confirm the specific nerve root causing your pain, leading to more accurate future treatment plans.
Performed in an outpatient setting in about 15-30 minutes, allowing you to return home the same day with minimal downtime.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
While Epidural Steroid Injections are widely considered safe and effective, like any medical procedure, they carry potential risks and side effects. Most are mild and temporary, and our team takes every precaution to ensure your safety.
Important: It is crucial to discuss your complete medical history, including all medications and allergies, with your doctor before the procedure to minimize any potential risks.
PREPARATION GUIDE
Proper preparation is key to a successful and smooth procedure. Please review the following important steps to ensure you are ready for your appointment.
Ensure you have a thorough review with Dr. Fura. Disclose all allergies, especially to medications like contrast dye.
Stop blood thinners and other specific medications as instructed by Dr. Fura before your procedure.
Do not eat or drink after midnight. You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home afterward.
Wear comfortable, loose clothing. Avoid jewelry and leave valuables at home for safekeeping.
RECOVERY GUIDE
Your recovery period is an important part of the treatment process. Following these guidelines will help ensure the best possible outcome from your injection.
Rest and take it easy. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or any strenuous activities. You may apply an ice pack to the injection site for 15-20 minutes at a time to reduce soreness.
You may resume normal light activities as tolerated. It is common to experience temporary soreness at the injection site. Pain relief from the steroid may begin during this period.
The anti-inflammatory effects of the steroid will continue to increase, with peak relief often occurring within the first week. You may be cleared to start or resume physical therapy.
Attend your scheduled follow-up appointment to discuss your level of pain relief and determine the next steps in your comprehensive treatment plan.
Please don't hesitate to reach out and request an appointment. We look forward to meeting with you, addressing your concerns, and working together to enhance your quality of life.
