TREATMENT OVERVIEW

Cervical Epidural Steroid Injection

A Cervical Epidural Steroid Injection is a minimally invasive procedure designed to relieve chronic neck, shoulder, and arm pain caused by inflammation of the nerve roots in the cervical spine. By delivering targeted anti-inflammatory medication, this treatment can effectively manage symptoms from conditions such as cervical herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and radiculopathy.

Quick Facts

  • • Procedure Duration: 15-30 minutes
  • • Recovery Time: Resume normal activities in 24-48 hours
  • • Pain Relief Onset: Typically within 2-7 days
  • • Success Rate: High rate of temporary relief for neck and arm pain

PROCEDURE DETAILS

What is the Procedure?

During the procedure, you will be positioned comfortably, either sitting or lying face down. The skin on the back of your neck is sterilized, and a local anesthetic is applied to numb the area, minimizing any discomfort.

Using fluoroscopy (live X-ray guidance), your physician will carefully guide a thin needle into the targeted epidural space of your cervical spine. The use of imaging is critical for ensuring precision and safety. A contrast dye may be injected to visually confirm that the medication will flow to the correct location around the inflamed nerves.

Once the needle is perfectly placed, a mixture of a corticosteroid and a local anesthetic is administered. The steroid reduces inflammation around the nerve roots to provide long-term relief, while the anesthetic offers immediate pain reduction. You will be monitored for a short period after the injection before being allowed to go home.

TREATMENT ADVANTAGES

What are the Benefits?

A Cervical Epidural Steroid Injection can provide profound benefits for individuals suffering from chronic neck and radiating arm pain, offering a safe alternative to surgery.

Targeted Neck & Arm Pain Relief

Medication is delivered directly to the inflamed nerve roots in the neck, providing focused relief from neck, shoulder, and radiating arm pain (radiculopathy).

Reduces Cervical Inflammation

The potent corticosteroid reduces swelling of the spinal nerves, alleviating the pressure that causes pain, numbness, and weakness.

Alternative to Surgery

This minimally invasive procedure can provide significant relief, potentially delaying or even eliminating the need for more invasive cervical spine surgery.

Improves Neck & Arm Function

By reducing pain, the injection can improve neck mobility and arm function, enabling more effective participation in physical therapy and daily activities.

Diagnostic Clarity

The relief provided can help confirm that a specific nerve root is the source of pain, which aids in creating a more precise long-term treatment strategy.

Quick Outpatient Procedure

The injection is a quick outpatient procedure, allowing you to return home the same day and get back to your routine with minimal interruption.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

What are the Risks and Side Effects?

Cervical epidural injections are very safe, especially when performed with X-ray guidance. However, as with all medical procedures, there are potential risks and side effects. Most are mild, temporary, and resolve on their own.

Common Side Effects

  • Temporary soreness or increased pain at the neck injection site
  • Facial flushing or a feeling of warmth
  • Mild headache or difficulty sleeping
  • Temporary lightheadedness or nausea

Rare Complications

  • Infection at the injection site
  • Bleeding, particularly for patients on blood thinners
  • Nerve injury or damage to the spinal cord
  • Dural puncture causing a severe spinal headache

Important: To ensure your safety, it's vital to provide a complete medical history, including all health conditions, allergies, and medications you are currently taking.

PREPARATION GUIDE

How to Prepare for the Procedure?

Proper preparation is key to a successful and smooth procedure. Please review the following important steps to ensure you are ready for your appointment.

Review of Allergies

Ensure you have a thorough review with Dr. Fura. Disclose all allergies, especially to medications like contrast dye.

Medication Adjustments

Stop blood thinners and other specific medications as instructed by Dr. Fura before your procedure.

Fasting & Transportation

Do not eat or drink after midnight. You must arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home afterward.

Day of Procedure Attire

Wear comfortable, loose clothing. Avoid jewelry and leave valuables at home for safekeeping.

RECOVERY GUIDE

What is the Post-Procedure Care?

Following your cervical injection, proper care is essential for a safe recovery and optimal results. Please adhere to these post-procedure instructions.

First 24 Hours

Rest and avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and sudden neck movements. Apply an ice pack to the back of your neck for 15 minutes at a time to ease soreness. Do not drive.

Days 2-3

You may gradually return to your normal daily activities. Mild soreness at the injection site is normal. You may begin to notice the initial effects of the steroid medication.

First Week

The anti-inflammatory benefits will continue to build, with pain relief often peaking during this time. You can typically resume physical therapy as directed by your physician.

Follow-up Visit

It's important to attend your follow-up appointment to assess your response to the injection and discuss the ongoing management of your condition.

When to Contact Your Doctor

  • Severe headache that worsens when you sit up
  • Fever, chills, redness or swelling at the injection site
  • New or worsening weakness/numbness in your arms or legs
