TREATMENT OVERVIEW
Botox® is an FDA-approved preventive treatment specifically for adults with Chronic Migraine (15 or more headache days per month). Administered as a series of small injections every 12 weeks, Botox works by preventing headaches and migraines before they even start. This proven therapy can help break the cycle of chronic pain, reduce the number of headache days you experience, and give you your life back.
PROCEDURE DETAILS
A Botox for Chronic Migraine treatment is a quick and well-tolerated in-office procedure. While you are seated comfortably, your physician will identify the specific injection sites according to the FDA-approved PREEMPT protocol, which targets 7 key muscle areas in the head and neck.
Using a very fine needle, your physician will administer a series of 31 small, shallow injections into the designated muscles of the forehead, temples, back of the head, neck, and upper back (trapezius). The medication is believed to work by blocking pain signals and inflammatory molecules involved in migraines.
The entire injection process is very quick, usually taking only about 10-15 minutes to complete. The discomfort is minimal, often described as a series of tiny pinpricks. You can return to your normal daily activities immediately after leaving the office.
TREATMENT ADVANTAGES
Botox offers a paradigm shift in migraine management—moving from just reacting to headaches to proactively preventing them, leading to fewer pain days and a better quality of life.
Botox is clinically proven to prevent on average 8 to 9 headache days and migraine/probable migraine days a month for chronic sufferers.
Many patients report that the headaches they do experience are less severe, more responsive to acute medication, and less disruptive to their daily lives.
The treatment works at the nerve endings and does not circulate throughout the body, avoiding the side effects of daily oral preventive medications.
The entire treatment involves a series of quick injections that are completed in about 15 minutes, allowing you to get right back to your day.
A single treatment session provides preventive benefits for up to 3 months (12 weeks), offering a convenient and reliable therapy schedule.
By reducing headache frequency, Botox helps you reclaim your life, making it easier to work, socialize, and make plans without the fear of a migraine attack.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Botox for Chronic Migraine is a very safe procedure when administered by a trained medical professional. Side effects are typically mild, temporary, and localized to the injection areas.
Important: Risks are minimized by using the specific, low doses and standardized injection protocol approved for Chronic Migraine. This is very different from cosmetic Botox use.
PREPARATION GUIDE
Preparation for Botox injections is minimal, but a few simple steps can help ensure a smooth and comfortable experience.
Ensure you have discussed your full medical history, allergies, and list of medications with your doctor before the treatment.
To minimize bruising, you may be asked to temporarily avoid blood thinners or certain supplements. Follow Dr. Fura's specific instructions.
There is no sedation, so you can eat, drink, and drive yourself to and from your appointment without any restrictions.
Wear comfortable clothing. It's helpful to avoid high collars or jewelry that could interfere with injections in the neck and shoulder area.
RECOVERY GUIDE
Recovery is immediate, but the preventive effects of the treatment build over time. Patience is key to seeing the full benefits.
You can return to your normal activities. It is often recommended to avoid vigorous exercise and rubbing the injected areas for the rest of the day. You may notice tiny bumps at the sites, which fade quickly.
Any minor soreness, neck stiffness, or bruising should begin to fade. You can use ice packs for comfort if needed. It is too early to feel the preventive effects.
This is when you will typically begin to notice a reduction in the frequency and/or severity of your headaches. The full benefit often builds over the first two treatment cycles.
The treatment is repeated every 12 weeks to maintain the preventive benefit. It is important to keep a headache diary to track your progress and share it with your doctor at each visit.
Please don't hesitate to reach out and request an appointment. We look forward to meeting with you, addressing your concerns, and working together to enhance your quality of life.
